In plants, sclerenchyma is support tissue made up of many types of hard woody cells. Mature sclerenchyma cells are often dead cells with substantially thickened secondary walls that contain lignin. The cells are hard and non-stretchable, and they are typically found in non-growing areas of plant bodies such as the bark or mature stems. Sclerenchyma is one of three forms of plant simple permanent tissue. We can observe the morphology in mounted permanent slides.
