Rhizopus is a genus of saprophytic fungus found on plants as well as specialised parasites on animals. They can be found in jellies, syrups, leather, bread and among other organic compounds. They have many cells. Some Rhizopus species are opportunistic human pathogens that cause mucormycosis, a potentially lethal illness. Rhizopus species form filamentous, branching hyphae with no cross-walls. They reproduce by producing both asexual (Sporangiospore) and sexual (Sporangiospore) spores (zygospore).
