Nostoc is a genus of cyanobacteria that lives in a variety of settings and develops colonies made up of filaments of moniliform cells encased in a gelatinous sheath. Nostoc can also be found in soil, on damp rocks, at the bottom of lakes and springs (both freshwater and saltwater), and on rare occasions in marine settings. It may also develop mutualistic relationship within plant tissues, supplying nitrogen to its host via terminally differentiated cells known as heterocysts. To achieve photosynthesis, these bacteria have photosynthetic pigments in the cytoplasm.
