Blood is a mixture of liquids and solids. The liquid component, known as plasma, is composed of water, salts, and protein. Plasma accounts for more than half of all blood. Red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets are all found in the solid component of blood. RBCs transport oxygen from your lungs to your tissues and organs. White blood cells (WBC) are immune system cells that combat infection. When you have a cut or a wound, platelets assist the blood clot. Bone marrow, the spongy substance found inside your bones, is responsible for the production of new blood cells. Blood cells are continually dying and being replaced by your body. Platelets have a lifespan of around 6 days while red blood cells have a lifespan of about 120 days.
