Laboratory furniture constitutes an integral component of any laboratory setup. It is essential to choose the
appropriate furniture as it makes the laboratory workspace safer, easier to use, and clean.
Apart from the apparatus, equipment, chemicals, and models, the furniture also plays a vital role in the smooth
functioning of a laboratory as it can withstand the different activities and situations that occur in the
laboratory.
We, at Labkafe, offer Innovative Lab Furniture Concepts and have designed some unique modular school lab
furniture. Simultaneously, we are constantly coming up with cutting-edge ideas to be the best laboratory
furniture manufacturer in India. We customize the lab furniture per the requirements of the
school/college/research institutions.
Lab Tables
These are tables specifically designed for carrying out experiments, handling reagents and samples,
etc. All the glassware, chemicals, and other necessary equipment required for a particular
experiment are kept on the lab table where the student actually performs the lab work.
Science lab tables can be classified in different ways taking various parameters into consideration, such as
1. Types of lab tables based on usage:
Wet lab tables
A wet lab is one where chemicals, reagents, and biological samples are used. So, the biology and chemistry
laboratories fall under the wet lab category, and wet lab tables are installed in such places.
These tables have at least one rack to hold the bottles of reagents and glassware. In the case of chemistry
labs, the reagent racks also double up as electrical raceway connections. A wet lab table usually has at least
one sink attached to it for washing glassware and disposing of chemicals.

Dry lab tables
On the other hand, a dry lab relies more on computation and calculation involving certain equipment and
apparatus like the physics laboratory. Thus, dry lab tables are perfect for the physics laboratory as they
require ample open surface area and proper electrical connections.
These types of lab workbenches are simply flat tables with some storage underneath and an electrical raceway
running through the midsection of the tabletop.

2. Types of lab tables based on placement
Island lab tables
These are large, isolated tables placed centrally in a laboratory, and are convenient for carrying out
experiments as they can be accessed from all sides.
The dimensions of an island table are approximately 8 feet X 5 feet. So, it can accommodate 3-4 students to work
on each side, which means approximately 8 students can be assigned per table. These tables constitute different
combinations of storage modules and electrical raceways. One can gain access to the storage modules from both
sides of the table.

Wall-facing lab tables
Wall-facing lab tables, on the other hand, are placed against the walls in a laboratory and are usually allotted
for setting up different apparatuses that the students use to perform experiments.
The positioning of wall-facing lab tables ensures that the apparatus remains properly arranged without any
chance of getting damaged. These tables are half of the island types and provide access and storage to one side.
So, wall-facing tables can accommodate only 4 students per table.

These tables also have different storage modules and electrical raceways combinations, but only on one side.
Wall-facing tables efficiently use the wall space and their length can be customized as per need. However, the
width of these tables remains fixed.

The lab tables that are built upon the C-type frame are called C-type assembly lab tables. The frame is a
squarish C-type arrangement of tubes, either square or rectangular in cross-section. The frame runs along the
length, breadth, and height of the table and acts as the sole load-bearing member. The heavy table top is
positioned directly on top of the frame and the storage modules hang from the C-frame. Two C-frames when placed
back-to-back on an island table, create an I-shaped table, which is even sturdier.
The benefits of such lab tables are- They can bear tremendous loads and withstand immense stress. So, they are
ideal for placing heavy apparatus and models in the laboratory. Also, the space underneath the table can be
easily cleaned or used to store some flat materials.
● Skirting-type assembly lab tables
These lab tables are essentially created to provide more storage space as the tables are mounted on a skirting
base where no space is left at the bottom. As a result, the maximum space is utilized for storage and there is
no possibility of accumulated dirt being visible under these lab tables. However, skirting-type lab tables are
mostly used for small-scale laboratories like the ones that are set up in schools for optimum use of the space
available and to reduce the trouble of cleaning underneath the tables. These tables are quite economical and
serve as a value-for-money option.
● Pedestal-type assembly lab tables
Each table is placed on self-standing square tube frame structures and the table tops are supported on
independent pedestals having lifted legs. The advantage of such a structure is that it offers more cleaning
space below the table. So, these tables are mostly used in colleges and research institutions where there is a
chance of frequent chemical spillage that needs to be cleaned immediately during lab experiments.

These 2 feet storage cabinets are positioned below the table tops and form an integral component of the
workbench in a laboratory. Under table storage units have many utilities as they are used to keep
chemicals, instruments, glassware, etc., close at hand. One can just open the cabinet and retrieve the
required materials while carrying out an experiment. These units are extremely convenient and help
students work efficiently in the laboratory. Under table storage modules come in different combinations
of drawers and shutters as per requirements.
Overhead storage:
These are storage cabinets that are hung on the upper walls of a laboratory and are fixed on the walls.
As these tables are located at a height in the lab, they cannot be accessed frequently. So they are
usually used for displaying models and structures in the biology laboratories which the students can see
easily. Also, these overhead storage units help maximize the space available as the upper walls would
have remained empty otherwise.
Full height storage:
These are full length (approximately 6 feet) storage units similar to an almirah for storing all the
relevant laboratory materials including glassware, bottles, instruments, etc. They provide sufficient
lockable storage space to stack up essential things present in a laboratory in an organized manner.

These open racks are designed for storing bulk chemicals and biological samples. Usually, the chemicals
that are used in laboratories come in big containers and cannot be used at once. So, these containers
are placed in slotted angle racks and required amounts of chemicals are taken from there and handed to
students in smaller bottles.
These racks come in different designs and dimensions, and are durable as they hold bulk materials and
samples.
Chemical storage:
These are storage units made exclusively for keeping chemicals used in the laboratory. These storage
modules are accompanied by a vent so that the fumes released by chemicals like hydrochloric acid,
ammonia, etc., are eliminated via the vent. Usually, chemical storage units are installed in
laboratories of colleges and research institutions as different types of chemicals are used for the
experiments.
